Dear Apple Community,
For the first time in a decade, I’m getting to spend the holiday season with my family, rather than intensely preparing for a Macworld keynote. Unfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on [...]

And that's how the mayor's tour of St.John's businesses began this afternoon—with a surprising conversation with the recently unemployed director of the St.John's Boosters, Gary Boehm, who became unemployed on December 16th after the Murphy bed store he's managed since March last year went out of business.
"Well, I'm sorry to hear that, Gary," said Adams, evidently taken aback.
"That's okay," Boehm responded. "Hey, I can do you a really great deal on a Murphy bed."
Perhaps he won't...

Local film news: The Hollywood Theater just got designated a "Sundance Art House Project Affiliate" by the Sundance Institute, an organization that attempts to "build audiences and develop a supportive national community of theaters committed to independent film."
Kudos to the Hollywood for the honor, but whatever: I'm selfish, and am thus more concerned about how this will benefit me. As for the effects we Portland cinephiles will see from this designation, things seem limited, but promising:...

It might be. I wasn't going to do one, but then I realized that in not posting a list, I'd be depriving you internet folk of the opportunity to weigh in. And it's really about all you. So here, in no particular order and with very little forethought, are some books that I liked in 2008.
Lush Life by Richard Price
Price's masterful cop drama drew inevitable comparisons to The Wire, and justly so.
The Flying Troutmans by Mirian Toews
Toews is a frank and likable writer, and her empathetic...

Tim Duy says 'Don't drink the kool-aid':
Local pride is an asset, but we should not let cheerleading lead to complacency. Policymakers and the business community need to stop drinking the “Oregon is different” Kool-Aid and recognize that with the national economy heading into what is likely the worst recession since the early 1980s, Oregon almost certainly faces an economic downturn that exceeds that of 2001-2003. The prudent approach in this environment is to plan for the worst, and hope for...

Thanks to the web-based application Text-to-Movie, available on the Xtranormal website, I am now an excellent director of animated features. How did I do it? Well, first you need to write a script.
Here is the marvelous and compelling script I wrote, based on a real conversation that happened today at the Mercury office.
SCENE 1 EXT DAY
X: I want soup for lunch.
Y: I prefer chowder.
X: No! Soup is better, dummy.
Y: In fact, you could even call me a "chowder head." Ha ha ha!
X: Shut up,...

For all those musicians who decided to dive headfirst into the creative sound established by Jesus and Mary Chain, few seemed to ever do it quite right. Sure, the shimmering mass of guitar noise generated by the brothers Reid is often seen as a major influence, but more often than not J&MC's pop sensibilities were lost in the shoegaze shuffle. I also thought Psychocandy was supposed to be closer to some lost Spector girl group than it was the Velvet Underground, or whatever seminal band they...

WOOT! Hey, look! We made Jeff Mapes' Oregonian politics blog for climbing into bed with the Democrats! SEXY.
After Willamette Week jumped out of bed with the Democratic Party of Oregon, the Portland Mercury was quick [to] take the place of its journalistic rival.
The Mercury is now cosponsoring an inaugural night bash with the Democratic Party and waving aside any concerns that it is compromising its journalistic integrity.

Despite the fact I spend a fairly big portion of my time in them, I'm not really a huge fan of movie theaters. I really like seeing movies on a big screen with good sound, sure, but (A) tickets are too fucking expensive, (B) the blaring, nonstop advertising at chains like Regal Cinemas makes me want to strangle myself, and (C) I swear to god, don't get me started on why 90 percent of people still can't figure out how to shut up or stop texting for two goddamn hours. (Seriously, some dude was...

The reason I don't own a Macintosh Computer... Aside from the fact that they won't sell me one because I call them Macintosh Computers... And they're too expensive... The reason is because when I'm not around, it's just going to smoke pot and call inappropriate humanitarian aid agencies for food. This is of particular concern because the Mercury Office is right next door to MercyCorps. Not to mention all that NSFW Language!

Long after I stopped bleaching my hair and quit pretending to care about skateboarding, I always held a special place in my heart of hearts for the (secular...sort of. They were one of the signature bands for Tooth & Nail for a while) skate punk of Bremerton, WA's MxPx. Over the years, my allegiance was reaffirmed when at a particularly shitty Warped Tour stop in Sacramento in 2005, I was about to leave prematurely when I heard the familiar tones of "Chick Magnet," raced back through the...

You know this video. Of course you do, it's been a YouTube sensation for quite a while now (1.7 million views and counting) and there is no denying that no matter how goofy—and ska heavy—the song is, "Jesus Is My Friend" is a pretty catchy and a total guilty pleasure.
So in an interesting turn of events, local indie label Arena Rock (home to Talkdemonic, Woom, etc.) is actually releasing an EP from those earnest '80s Christians in Sonseed. The EP—which will contain "Jesus Is...

The arrest of Sherry Johnston—Tripp Palin's other grandma—was delayed until after the election due to apparent interference from Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's office, according to officers involved with the investigation. And it looks like someone bent the rules—federal regulations actually—so that Sarah Palin's daughter's born-out-of-wedlock son's baby daddy, Levi, could get a job.
